The Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1998

Made: 03-10-1998 | Laid: 09-10-1998 | Forced: 31-10-1998

Overview

The Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1998 set out the legal framework for the safe installation, maintenance and use of gas systems and appliances in Great Britain. The Regulations impose clear duties on employers, self-employed persons, landlords and gas engineers to prevent risks to health and safety arising from gas installations.

These Regulations are made under the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 and are enforced primarily by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE). They apply to both domestic and non-domestic premises and remain one of the most heavily enforced safety regimes in the UK, particularly in relation to landlord duties and competence requirements.

Benefits of compliance:

  • Reduces risk of gas leaks, fires, explosions and carbon monoxide poisoning.
  • Avoids criminal enforcement, prohibition notices and prosecution.
  • Demonstrates compliance with ISO 45001 (occupational health and safety).
  • Supports safe property management and tenant protection.
  • Strengthens organisational duty-of-care governance.
