Overview


The Environment Act 1995 provided for the establishment of various body corporates and the transfer of functions, property, rights and liabilities to those bodies. The body corporates established by the Act are:

  • The Environment Agency
  • The Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA); and
  • The National Parks Authorities.

The Act also made provision with respect to contaminated land, abandoned mines and National Parks as well as for the control of pollution and the conservation of natural resources and the conservation or enhancement of the environment. Furthermore, the Act made provision for imposing obligations on certain persons with respect to certain products or materials, made provision in relation to fisheries, made provision for certain enactments to bind the Crown as well as made provision with respect to the application of certain enactments in relation to the Isles of Scilly.
