Made: 26-06-2013 | Laid: 26-06-2013 | Forced: 26-06-2013

Overview

Directive 2013/35/EU establishes the minimum health and safety requirements for protecting workers from risks arising from exposure to electromagnetic fields (EMFs) in the workplace. It is the 20th individual directive under the EU Occupational Health and Safety Framework Directive (89/391/EEC) and repealed Directive 2004/40/EC.

The Directive applies to exposure from static electric fields, static magnetic fields, and time-varying electromagnetic fields up to 300 GHz. It addresses scientifically established short-term direct biophysical effects and indirect effects of EMF exposure.

Examples of workplace sources include:

  • MRI equipment.
  • High-voltage electrical installations.
  • Industrial heating equipment.
  • Welding systems.
  • Broadcasting and telecommunications equipment.
