Directive 2003/10/EC on the minimum health and safety requirements regarding the exposure of workers to the risks arising from physical agents (noise)

Overview

Directive 2003/10/EC establishes health and safety requirements to protect workers from risks arising from noise exposure in the workplace. The Directive aims to protect workers from these health risks and set minimum standards across the EU member states. 

The Directive defines specific thresholds for exposure limits, based on daily or weekly noise exposure levels and peak sound pressure: 

• Exposure Limit Value: 87 dB(A) (taking into account hearing protection) 
• Upper Exposure Action Value: 85 dB(A) 
• Lower Exposure Action Value: 80 dB(A)

Employers must carry out risk assessments and take measures to avoid or reduce noise exposure. Employers must also ensure that workers receive comprehensive information and training on the risks of exposure, exposure limits and prevention measures which have been put in place.
