The Trade Union Act 2016 establishes a more modernised framework for all those with an interest in positive industrial relations, such as workers, employers and trade unions. This framework includes more effective regulation of trade unions through their own regulatory body, the Certification Officer (CO), who is responsible for statutory functions relating to trade unions and employers’ associations. The Act enhances the powers of the CO to include greater investigatory powers and the power to introduce a partial levy on trade unions and employer associations.
