The Special Waste Regulations 1996 set out the requirements and definitions of hazardous waste (known as 'Special Waste' in Scotland). The Regulations also set out procedures to be followed when disposing of, carrying and receiving special waste, and is the principal legislation covering special waste.
These regulations are applicable to Scotland.
In Scotland, waste that is harmful to human health or the environment is called ‘special waste’ whereas in other parts of the UK and the EU, special waste is referred to as ‘hazardous waste’.
