Its international acceptance now firmly positions Occupational Health and Safety as a key pillar in the risk management portfolio for all organisations, and adoption of it, and the central principle of using the Hierarchy of Controls will help to:
The principle objective of an Occupational Health and Safety management system that uses the 45001 requirements is that an organisation provides safe and healthy workplaces, as well as preventing work-related injury and ill health wherever possible.
The workplace was formally introduced to the concept of risk assessment in 1992 with the introduction of the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations. These regulations were released with a group of six regulatory requirements referred to as the ‘6 Pack’.
To assist the management of these regulatory requirements, industry developed BS 8800 as a non-certified guide to Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S). The successful introduction of BS 8800 inspired the development of OHSAS 18001 as the world’s first certified Occupational Standard. After many years of global debate, ISO 45001 was released on 12th March 2018 as the first OH&S management Standard harmonised with ISO 9001 QMS, ISO 14001 EMS and ISO 27001 Information Security Standards.
