An Act to consolidate certain enactments and provisions relating to town and country planning in Scotland. The Act governs the Scottish planning system, and ensures that future development and use of land in cities, towns and rural areas is sustainable, with objectives to promote sustainable economic development, encourage regeneration and maintain and enhance the quality of the natural heritage and built environment in Scotland.
The Town and Country Planning (Scotland) Act 1997 remains the principal planning statute in Scotland. It has been amended numerous times, including by the Planning (Scotland) Act 2019, but it remains in force and forms the foundation of Scotland's planning system.
