Regulation (EU) 2023/2405 on ensuring a level playing field for sustainable air transport (ReFuelEU Aviation)

Made: 18-10-2023 | Laid: 18-10-2023 | Forced: 18-10-2023

Overview

Regulation (EU) 2023/2405, known as ReFuelEU Aviation, aims to ensure a sustainable air transport sector across the European Union by mandating the gradual increase of sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) in airline fuel blends. This regulation is part of the EU's broader "Fit for 55" package, designed to help achieve the EU's climate targets for 2030 and 2050 while maintaining a competitive air transport sector.

ReFuelEU Aviation seeks to create a level playing field in the aviation sector by requiring increased use of SAF, which generate significantly lower life-cycle emissions than conventional jet fuels. The regulation sets progressive targets for SAF blending percentages that airlines must meet when refuelling at EU airports.

ReFuelEU Aviation is a critical step in reducing the aviation sector's carbon footprint, aligning with the EU’s ambitious climate goals and promoting the use of cleaner energy sources within the industry.
