Made: 20-06-2011 | Laid: 22-06-2011 | Forced: 20-07-2011

Overview

The Energy Information Regulations 2011 establish a framework for the setting of energy labelling and standard product information requirements for energy-related products.

As a result, Energy consuming products, such as fridges, tumble driers and washing machines, are required to be labelled with consistent and clear energy usage information is given about each item, allowing customers to make an informed decision when considering a purchase. An intended outcome of improved labelling is to heighten consumer awareness and encourage competition to improve energy efficiency. Please note, the regulations do not apply to second-hand products or transport.

Some examples of energy-related products include, but are not limited to:

  • household tumble driers
  • household refrigerators
  • household electric ovens
  • air conditioners
  • televisions
  • electric lamps and luminaries
  • vacuum cleaners (other than water-filled vacuum cleaners)
  • local space heaters
  • freezers

All these appliances must:

  • Display a standard energy label
  • Be accompanied by a fiche; which is a table of information giving specified performance data
  • Be supported by technical documentation allowing the accuracy of the label and fiche to be assessed

The Office for Product Safety and Standards (Safety & Standards), local authorities and the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) are responsible for enforcing the regulations.
