The Climate Change Act (Northern Ireland) 2022 sets out specific greenhouse gas emission reduction targets for Northern Ireland. Whilst the UK Climate Change Act 2008 extends to Northern Ireland, it does not set specific targets for Northern Ireland. This creates a legislative gap as it is paramount Northern Ireland also contribute to the global effort to tackle climate change. Therefore, this Act creates a framework which establishes a pathway to achieving emission reduction targets in Northern Ireland. As such, it supports development of a greener, low carbon, circular economy in Northern Ireland.
