Overview


This Republic of Ireland legislation regulates and controls the manufacture, use, placing on the market, trade, transport, testing, storage, classification, packaging and labelling of chemicals. The aim of this Act is to make provision in relation to major accident hazards, as well as the prevention of major accidents involving chemicals. They also give effect to important EU chemicals legislation, particularly Regulation (EC) No. 1907/2006 (REACH), into the context of chemicals regulation in the Republic of Ireland.

In the case of this Act, the definition of "chemical" includes:

  • a chemical, preparation or article within the meaning of the Rotterdam Regulation;
  • a detergent within the meaning of the Detergents Regulation; and
  • a substance, preparation or article within the meaning of the REACH Regulation.
